Question 1

Laser lights create beam, aerial and animation effects using galvanometer scanners, while laser projectors display full-motion video content and are measured in lumens rather than watts.

Accepted Answer

Direct answerLaser lights create beam, aerial and animation effects in the air using galvanometer scanners, while laser projectors display full-motion video onto surfaces and are measured in lumens rather than watts.Side-by-Side ComparisonAspectLaser lights (RGB animation)Laser projectors (video and media)Output effectBeams, aerial effects and laser animationsFull-motion video projected onto surfacesCore technologyGalvanometer scanners at 30K - 45K pps3LCD or similar projection technologyMeasured inWatts, typically 3W - 300W RGBLumens, typically 3200lm - 20000lmTypical useConcerts, clubs, festivals and live showsPresentations, mapping and immersive displaysControlILDA, DMX512, Sound Active and APPResolution based, such as WUXGA 1920x1200How to DecideChoose laser lights when the goal is air beams, graphics and live show energyChoose projectors when the goal is video content, mapping or interactive displayLarge productions frequently combine both categories in one designDarkTone manufactures both categories, including 3200lm interactive models, 6500lm short-throw 3LCD models and 20000lm high-brightness units.Ask DarkTone which category fits your application

Question 2

Confirm five items before installation: mounting distance, target image size, load-bearing capacity, power supply and cable routing. Outdoor projects also need thermostatic cabinet space and protected cable runs.

Accepted Answer

Direct answerConfirm five parameters before installation: mounting distance, target image size, load-bearing capacity of the rigging point, available power supply, and cable routing. For outdoor projects, also reserve space for a thermostatic cabinet and protect every cable run.Core Parameters to Confirm On SiteParameterWhat to checkWhy it mattersMounting distanceDistance from lens to projection surfaceSets image size and lens choiceImage sizeRequired height and width of the pictureMust match the facade or screen areaLoad-bearingStrength of the wall, truss or towerPrevents vibration and drop riskPower supplyVoltage, current and circuit protectionAvoids overload and voltage dropCable routeSignal line length, grounding, protectionKeeps control stable in all weatherOutdoor Projects Need Two Extra ChecksReserve a position for the thermostatic cabinet that keeps the projector within its working temperature rangeProtect cables, connectors and junction boxes against water, UV exposure and mechanical damageKeep service access clear so lenses and filters can be cleaned without dismantling the rigComplete a short site survey record before the final model and power are confirmed, so the delivered configuration matches the actual installation conditions.Send your site plan to a DarkTone engineer for a free review

Question 3

Choose by installation distance. Long-throw lenses suit long-distance large images such as building facades; short-throw lenses suit tight spaces, indoor rooms and floor-level installations where throw distance is limited.

Accepted Answer

Direct answerChoose by installation distance. Long-throw lenses are for long-distance, large-format images such as building facades and towers. Short-throw lenses are for tight spaces, indoor exhibitions and floor installations where the projector sits close to the surface.Quick Selection GuideInstallation situationRecommended typeTypical useLong distance with limited rigging spaceLong-throw lensBuilding facade, tower, bridgeShort distance, large image requiredShort-throw lensIndoor wall, museum gallery, shop windowFloor or ceiling-mounted in a roomShort-throw lensImmersive room, exhibition boothLong-distance aerial projectionLong-throw lensLandmark and riverfront showsHow to Calculate Before You OrderDivide the required image width by the projector throw ratio to get the mounting distanceCheck that the mounting position can reach that distance without blocking sight lines or walkwaysConfirm the planned image size still fits the surface after lens shift and keystone correctionLeave a small margin for on-site adjustment instead of designing to the exact limitSend the mounting distance and target image size together, and the right lens can be confirmed before the order is placed.Ask a DarkTone engineer to confirm the right lens for your site

Question 4

Yes, but very slowly. Laser light sources fade gradually rather than failing suddenly, with a rated life of about 20,000 hours in normal mode and up to 30,000 hours in eco mode, far longer than lamp-based projectors.

Accepted Answer

Direct answerYes, but far more slowly than lamp projectors. A laser light source fades gradually instead of dropping suddenly, with a rated life of about 20,000 hours in normal mode and up to 30,000 hours in eco mode. What Degradation Actually Looks LikeItemLamp projectorLaser projectorTypical light source lifeAbout 2,000 hours20,000 hours normal / 30,000 hours ecoFailure patternSudden end of life, lamp replacementGradual fade over the rated lifeColour drift over timeNoticeable shift as the lamp agesStable colour output across the life spanRoutine costRepeated lamp purchasesNo lamp replacement costHow to Protect Brightness Long TermKeep the air intake and filters clean so heat does not build up inside the housingUse eco mode for daily operation and reserve full output for peak show momentsMaintain stable ambient temperature, especially in outdoor cabinetsSchedule an annual output check so the effect level can be adjusted before visitors noticeDegradation is gradual and predictable, so long-running venues can plan a brightness budget instead of facing sudden failures.Ask DarkTone for a lifespan estimate for your use case

Question 5

Pair outdoor projectors with a thermostatic cabinet and choose IP65-rated housings. This combination holds the internal temperature and optics stable through heat, cold, dust and rain for landmark and facade shows.

Accepted Answer

Direct answerPair outdoor projectors with a thermostatic cabinet and use IP65-rated housings. This combination keeps the internal temperature and optical path stable through heat, cold, dust and rain. The Two Building Blocks of StabilityThermostatic cabinetHeats in cold weather and cools in heat, keeping the projector inside its working temperature range all year.IP65 housingDust-tight and resistant to water jets, so rain, spray and dust do not reach the optics or electronics.Protected installationWaterproof connectors, drip loops and lightning protection on the power and control lines.Environmental Conditions to Plan ForHigh summer heat combined with direct solar load on the cabinet surfaceSub-zero winter nights that can slow or lock movement and electronicsSalt spray in coastal and riverside locationsDust and sand carried by wind at open sitesPower fluctuations at remote installations, handled with surge and voltage protectionFor permanent landmark and bridge installations, confirm the local climate record before finalising cabinet specification and service intervals.Discuss your outdoor site conditions with a DarkTone engineer

Question 6

3LCD laser projectors deliver high colour accuracy and uniform brightness without colour breaks or rainbow effects, which suits long-hour building projection, immersive exhibitions and cultural light projects.

Accepted Answer

Direct answer3LCD laser projectors deliver high colour accuracy and uniform brightness with no colour break-up or rainbow fringing, which makes them well suited to long-hour building projection, immersive exhibitions and cultural light projects. What 3LCD Changes on ScreenFull colour output in every frame, so fast motion does not show a colour wheel break-up patternEven brightness from centre to corner, which keeps large facade images looking consistentNatural colour reproduction for filmed content, artwork and archive footageNo rainbow effect, so camera footage of the show stays clean for broadcast and social mediaStable colour over the light source life, which suits permanent installationsWhere This Matters MostLong-duration facade and landmark shows that must look the same every nightImmersive rooms and cultural exhibitions where visitors view the image up closeInstallations that are filmed or streamed, where camera artifacts are unacceptableContent-heavy productions mixing video, graphics and text in one pictureCombine 3LCD image performance with high-power laser output when the projection surface is large or ambient light cannot be controlled.Ask DarkTone which projector platform fits your project
